Peggy Ruth Crews, 81, passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at St. Bernards Medical Center. Born on August 20, 1942, in Lake City to Sylvester Richard Despain and Selma Ferrell Despain, Peggy dedicated her life to education and community service.
Peggy served as a beloved school teacher within the Jonesboro Public Schools system. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Jonesboro where she not only taught Sunday School but also contributed her time and efforts to the records department, leaving a lasting impact on her congregation.
An avid reader, Peggy found solace and inspiration within the pages of her Bible and various other books. Additionally, Peggy served as the esteemed president of the P.E.O Chapter BN, further exemplifying her dedication to empowering women and fostering community connections.
Beyond her professional and community achievements, Peggy cherished the simple joys of life including cooking, playing bridge, and hosting bridge parties. Her warm hospitality and infectious laughter made every gathering a memorable occasion.
Peggy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald Crews; granddaughter, Kinley Crews; and brothers, Jimmy Ferrell Despain and infant Melvin Richard Despain. She is survived by her son, Brent Crews of Texas, as well as her devoted caregiver, Kristy Crews, and three cherished grandchildren: Kaemon Crews, Keegun Yancey, and Kyla Yancey.
A graveside service to honor Peggy's life will be held at Jonesboro Memorial Park at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024.
